Will Wearing A Skiing Helmet Become Compulsory In Austria?

By Brigitta Vetter of 3C First Ltd.

Last weekend, on New Years Day, Dieter Althaus, Minister President of the county of Thüringen, Germany, had a skiing crash on a crossing of 2 downhill slopes in Austria, with a 41 year old woman from Slovakia. The woman died from scull fractures on her way to hospital, Mr. Althaus first refused any medical treatment, within a short time, however, he felt ill and was taken to hospital as well, where severe injuries to his brain were diagnosed and he fell into a coma. He is fine again by now, back from the coma, but has no remembrance of the accident itself. Doctors say, this is quite usual.

Fact is, all experts agree, had both been wearing skiing helmets, the Slovakian woman, a mother of 2 small children, would most likely still be alive, and Mr. Althaus hardly - most likely, not hurt at all.

Serious discussion is now being held to make wearing skiing helmets for adults a law and compulsory now. 85% of children wear ski with helmets, but less than around 20% of grown-ups.

What is your opinion on this? I'm a bit undecided about it as yet, however, no doubt skiing has become such a mass sport movement and unfortunately, with plenty of rowdies on the pistes who ski reckless and uncontrolled, there is hardly another way to protect yourself from severe injury in such crashes than indeed wearing a helmet. Will they be designing skies with a built in speed limit device next?

As in the case above, there seems to be an eye witness now, he's been questioned by police already, and although no official statement was given as yet, rumours have it that most likely Mr. Althaus was the rowdy, and prosecution has officially opened a case accusing Mr. Althaus of ??? with deadly outcome. The ?? stands for the loss of words - would it be reckless skiing parallel to reckless driving on the road?

But with him being a prominent politician, the investigation will most likely end nowhere for diplomatic reasons, or does anyone here actually think he will end up in prison?

Had this discussion about helmets even been started in the first place, if this accident had occurred between two normal, everyday people?
