Should You Buy Souveniers?
By Brigitta Vetter of 3C First Ltd.
Whenever I walk through our city - Vienna - on a Sunday I notice that lately the only open shops are those selling souvenirs - for the sake of the tourist. So what else do you do but look into their window, and it's just ghastly what kitsch you see in there. In the vicinity of our concert house, there is a shop showing off miniture heads of the famous musicians - Mozart, Beehoven, Schubert, Strauss. Does anybody get inspired to play the piano with look at a plaster head of Mozart? I doubt it. The other day I was reading a book about Feng Shui and one of the rules there says: get rid of all the clutter in your home. Anything you have not used for 12 month - put it outside your home or cast it away. I guess, those wise old men of China knew what they are talking about - so I went ahead and actually put all those ghastly minitures (the Eiffel tower, masks of Venice, miniture soccer shoes etc.- etc.) in a bag, and brought them to my local parish for the next flea market. I know I'm speaking against a flourishing industry - but facing the economic crisis, we should all think twice about spending money on useless things. |
