Pride - The Big Motivator
By Brigitta Vetter
You'll still remember when you were little and the 1st time you managed to tie your shoelaces? "Mommy is soooo proud of you!" Or when you came home with good grades from school - ! You may have also become one of those people who worked very hard to get promoted and to hear praise from your boss every time you did something great for the company. Pride in their country makes young army recruits stand upright and shout patriotic songs. As we grow older we realise, how many facets life actually has and - that some of those are dark and dirty. That applies to history in particular. Families, Persons - too. When someone claims they are proud because they - or something is so shiny and all round perfect - you should become VERY suspicious. I- for instance, realized, that my parents projected their dreams and wishes into us children, and were extremely proud when we went along with that. As soon as we stepped outside of their projection to do something different - this child fell from grace and got little more attention. And I almost fell into the same trap with my own children. When the going got rough for them and they reacted in other ways that I would have thought best - well - you know the rest. Until I thought and remembered - and I think it is written somewhere - true love is "unconditional". So much being said about "forgiving" - that goes also for forgiving yourself when you've done something you are actually ashamed of - these are dangerous times for "pride" - as a proud person may try to destroy him/herself in such a state. These are the moments we should remember our Religion - whatever that is, and Creator, the Lord. He forgives everything - if you try to overcome - he'll be proud if you do - and he loves all us humans. As for myself, I have difficulty to understand people that are proud because "their" soccer team won, and they watched the play on TV only - WHY? But yes - managers and marketers are manipulating us through this "pride" thing - and big time - folks!! Pay attention at the next commercial you hear and think about it in a different way. Why should I be proud to drive (and have chosen to buy) a Volkswagen? Because I could not afford the Audi I actually would dream about? Or should I be "proud" to have bought the Audi - which I can't afford? For marketers - you should be proud in either case - you see? All things told - pride a big motivator and - let's not forget - also a big manipulator in our society - ! |
